Law Day Ask-a-Lawyer
Call-in Program      

     Once a year, New Mexico residents can get their legal questions answered for free on the Saturday closest to Law Day, May 1. Volunteer attorneys staff phone lines and answer questions from around the state on a variety of topics including: employment law, divorce, child support, landlord/tenant issues, personal injury, estate planning, real estate and more. Constitution Day


     In the spirit of Constitution Day and to aid in the fulfillment of Public Law 108-447 Sec. 111 Division J - SEC. 111(b), the YLD organizes a public education program that provides participating New Mexico fifth-grade classes with U.S. Constitution booklets to keep and an educational lesson from a New Mexico attorney. Volunteers visit fifth-grade classes around the state and provide a lesson on the U.S. Constitution once a year during the week of Sept. 17. Visit for more information.

Homeless Legal Clinics

     The YLD operates homeless legal clinics in Las Cruces and Santa Fe. Volunteer attorneys staff the clinics and provide legal information and advice and refer clients to low income or pro bono legal service programs. Click here for more information.

Legal Resources for the
Elderly Program

     Legal Resources for the Elderly Program (LREP) is a free legal helpline and referral service for New Mexico residents age 55 and older. LREP referrals to panel attorneys are only made after a staff attorney has screened the case and determined that it is appropriate for referral. LREP referrals are made on full-fee, reduced-fee and pro bono basis. LREP handles approximately 5,000 cases each year. Roughly 10% of LREP's cases are referred to private attorneys for further legal assistance. Click here for more information about LREP and to view attorney eligibility information

State Bar General Referral Program

     General Referral Program panel attorneys agree to provide referral clients with a free, 30-minute consultation. Any services rendered after the initial 30 minutes are billed at the attorney's regular hourly rate. The General Referral Program receives over 10,000 calls per year. Wills for Heroes

     The Wills for Heroes program provides free wills, advance healthcare directives and powers of attorney free of charge to first-responders. Volunteer attorneys complete legal documents during the event using an electronic hotdocs software. Events are held throughout the state periodically during the year. Veterans Legal Clinic

     On a quarterly basis, the YLD and New Mexico VA Health Care System hosts free civil legal clinics for New Mexico's Veterans.
